Which Littmann stethoscope
should you actually buy?

Buy the 3M Littmann Classic III unless you are doing cardiology or critical care. It costs SGD 175–195 in Singapore depending on the colour finish, covers every requirement of nursing school, medical school and general practice, and is the model Singapore nursing cohorts are routinely told to bring.
Buy the Cardiology IV (SGD 340) only if you regularly listen for low-frequency cardiac murmurs. Its dual-lumen tubing and heavier chestpiece are a genuine acoustic upgrade, but one most clinicians will not use.
What a Littmann costs in Singapore

Classic III
It is the model nearly every Singapore nursing cohort is told to buy. The tunable diaphragm covers everything an undergraduate placement asks for, and at SGD 175 it survives being carried daily for three years without being painful to replace.
Medical students & house officers
Classic III
Same instrument, and it will carry you through clinical years comfortably. Most people only feel the ceiling of a Classic III once they are doing focused cardiac work, which is well after graduation.
GPs & ward nurses
Classic III
For general auscultation the Classic III is not the limiting factor — ambient ward noise is. Spend the difference on a spare set of eartips instead.
Cardiology, ICU & senior clinicians
Cardiology IV
The dual-lumen tubing and heavier chestpiece genuinely resolve low-frequency murmurs the Classic III softens. At SGD 340 it is a real step up in price, and worth it only if you are listening for those sounds routinely.
How to tell a real Littmann from a fake
Counterfeit Littmanns are a real problem in this market, and they are convincing in photographs. Four things separate a genuine unit from a copy:
- Laser etching. The model name and serial number are cleanly etched into the chestpiece, not printed or stamped unevenly.
- Sealed 3M packaging with the warranty documentation inside. A unit arriving loose in a generic box is a warning.
- Tubing quality. Genuine tubing is uniform, matte and odourless. Counterfeits often have a visible seam and a distinct chemical smell.
- The price. The clearest signal of all. 3M does not discount the Classic III far below SGD 175. A “Littmann” at SGD 60 is not a bargain, it is a different product.
